Working with Uncomfortable Emotions

Working with Uncomfortable Emotions

When something doesn’t feel good, it’s natural to try not to feel it — who wants pain and suffering? So you tend to try to look the other way, distract yourself from the thought/circumstances/etc that triggered the uncomfortable feelings.

You think about something else, DO something to stay busy enough so you can forget, at least for a little while.

You numb out with alcohol, food, drugs, sex, binging Netflix… It can work!

Problem is, you have to keep doing it for it to work.

But when it’s quiet and still, the unwanted feelings come right back.

But when it’s quiet and still, the unwanted feelings come right back.

They’re always waiting.

There’s no amount of sweeping them under the rug that will ever make the pain go away.

It’s what we do, most often, because we haven’t been taught how to fully feel at all AND still be okay.

Once you learn this skill though, the skill of feeling it all and being okay, NOTHING gets to have power over you any longer because you know that, even though you may not have chosen it, whatever happens you can allow it to move through you.

This way you don’t have to keep doing more, distracting yourself, numbing out…

You have that time, energy, resources back.

Life gets easier.

You are free to do what you actually want, not what you must in order to avoid feeling crappy.
